Hors d’oeuvre Andrea Ferguson
Main Course The Shantymen, Steve Cooper, Arnie Wheeler Rob Day, Sam Harrison, Bob “Easy” Reid John Ecob
Dessert Toby Harris For one or two of us 2007 was pretty much un anno horribilis, so we can only hope and pray that 2008 will treat us a little kinder. To kick off the year on a good note, Andrea, with exemplary timekeeping, sets sail at 7.30 on the dot with her beautiful ballad, “You Forgot To Say Goodbye”. She continues with “Dangerous Woman”, “Caleb Mayer “and “Wayfaring Stranger” before finishing off with “Summertime”. The Shantymen were gigging here until the early hours of this morning but they’re still going as strong as ever tonight. John, who laudably never missed a single GEOM last year, introduces an interesting Indian influenced instrumental before Steve joins him on vocals for the sing-along “Charlie Mops”. Steve Cooper entertains us with a blues original and a cover before Arnie performs “Apart From Their Hearts” and “Working Class Hero”. Due to personal reasons, Rob hasn’t been able to come down here for a long time but having spent the Christmas break here with friends in Lincoln he’s popped in tonight to treat us to a few songs. Rob begins with his deservedly popular “Country Song” and then introduces a new composition, “Not Ready To Love” before rounding off with “Song For A Friend”. He’s lost none of his magic and it’s great to see him once again. Sam follows with three covers including “Crossroads” and “Mighty Quinn” before Easy offers us “Looking For Someone”. Steve L. then joins him for “Got My Mojo Working”. John Ecob is up next with a typically solid and varied spot featuring his own “Capital Thrill”, Faith No More’s “Take This Bottle” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and then Easy joins Andrea to take us to the break with another rendition of “Summertime”. The New Year celebrations continued well into the early hours here so Tracy only had about four hours sleep last night but even after having spent all lunchtime sating the thirst of a pub full of football fans, she’s still toiling away over a hot stove at 9pm in order to feed the GEOM crowd with some tasty chilli. What a star she is! Andrea opens the second half by dedicating her own “No More” to her friend Irene which she follows with “Joey”. The Shantymen return with an instrumental featuring John on bouzouki who then switches to his banjo for a frenetic number with Steve being the only percussionist who can keep pace with it. That just leaves Toby, accompanied by Arnie and Sam, to display his piano-accordeon skills on “Drunken Sailor”. |
