Happily, Andrea is looking pretty much back on form tonight which is probably just as well for there are a whole host of would be performers vying to have their name scribbled on her clipboard. There is a lot to pack in, so she gets us of to a prompt start with “Closer to Fine”. Andrea follows up with her own beautiful yet hauntingly sad, “No More” before finishing off with her more upbeat “Long Gone”. Sam, dressed in an eye-catching pirate’s hat, has brought down his banjolele from which he conjures up a rather original version of “That Will Be The Day” before switching to guitar for “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” and a lively “Irish Rover”. It is always a pleasure to welcome new faces down here and George makes a worthy debut with three covers including The Calling’s “I’ll Go Wherever You Will Go” and Busted’s “Thunderbirds Are Go”. Richard looks relaxed and is in fine form tonight as he starts off with Bob Dylan’s “Blood In My Eyes”. He continues with his own instrumental, “Emily’s Dance” before rounding off with a favourite of landlord Pete, Gary Moore’s “I’ve Still Got The Blues For You”. Due to various personal commitments, Mike’s not been down for some while now so understandably he starts out on solid ground with the familiar “Three Steps To Heaven” and “She Never Spoke Spanish To Me”. However there was always a feeling that Mike was going to conjure up something special and so it proves to be. Brinsley Schwarz were a talented though underrated seventies band who sadly never got the breakthrough they deserved so it’s an absolute delight to hear a great Nick Lowe song being performed at the Golden Eagle and what finer man to do it than Mike himself? Next up is that man with the songbook, Tom Taylor, who we haven’t seen since his marathon gig here a few months ago. Tom kicks off with “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” and “The Boys Are Back In Town” before taking us to the break with “Half The World Away”. After an understandably tentative debut a few weeks ago, Arnie’s really starting to find his feet and the fact that he was able to support the Shantymen at their gig here last Saturday can only have helped his confidence, which is reflected in his performance tonight as he treats us to two self-penned numbers, possibly entitled “Apart From The Hearts” and “Through The Valley”. Elvis impersonator Rocking Bob is a familiar figure on the local music scene but he’s making his debut at the GEOM. Whilst his somewhat karaoke style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, Bob’s a genuine chap who always tries his best to entertain and please his audience. Curiously, he’s not brought his music box tonight but after an impromptu half time rehearsal, he takes to the ‘stage’ with Andrea and Sam on guitars and Steve on laptop to rock us with “All Shook Up” and “Hound Dog”. Interesting. Better than the karaoke, methinks. Steve’s been away in Texas recently, touring with his band, the delightful Ploughman’s Bunch, and he’s brought back a rather “wow!” genuine Texan shirt. Appropriately, or almost appropriately, Steve begins with Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon Of Kentucky” before following up with his own “I Lost My Hat”. To round off, Steve invites Steve L. on laptop and Easy on blues harp to accompany him as Andrea and Sam, on guitar and banjolele respectively, join in as well for the good old sing-along, “Bad Moon Rising”. Next up are the Shantymen who entertain us with three shanties, the biting satirical “Bloody Lincoln”, “Drunken Sailor” and “Biker Hill”. Easy and Dan follow with a cracking “Stormy Monday”, featuring some terrific guitar work by Nick before his inspirational father, Karl, brings another excellent evening to a close. |
