Hors d’oeuvre: Andrea Ferguson Main Course: Steve Jackson, Bob “Easy” Reid, The Shantymen, Karl Svarc Dessert: Pot pourri
After having enjoyed a well-earned break in Wales, Andrea was back at work for the first time today – and we all know what a soul-destroying experience that can be! – so she understandably decides to stick to some tried and trusted material tonight as she sets sail with the traditional “Wayfaring Stranger”. She follows with her own composition, “Lonely Man”, a lovely, plaintive song about a now departed friend she met several years ago in Clonakilty. Sensing that a more upbeat mood might be appropriate, Andrea treats us to the Indigo Girls’ bouncy “Closer To Fine” before finishing off her first spot with her own equally upbeat “Dangerous Woman”. Steve opens in a subdued mood with Dick Holler’s “Abraham, Martin And John” before upping the tempo with Huddie Ledbetter’s “Midnight Special”. Easy and Steve L. then join in as Steve concludes with the traditional sing-along “Roll In My Sweet Baby’s Arms”. Despite his problems, Bob’s never short of a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm for music. He soon adds a bit of bounce to the night as he treats us to Rufus Thomas’s “Walking The Dog”, Peter Green’s “Looking For Someone” and John Lee Hooker’s “Dimples”. Good Old Easy! Still an inspiration for us all. Andrea plugs a gap with “Mercedes Benz” while pub favourites the Shantymen get their selves ready. The boys begin with an instrumental before Christmas comes early as they launch into a humorous shanty, “The Turkey Song” and then take us to the break with the familiar “John Knacknacka”. As we tuck into the tasty sandwiches and chips provided by our ever generous hosts, Tracy and Pete, we can reflect upon the satisfying fact that our OM receives a mention in The Golden Eagle’s inevitable – but much deserved – entry in the 2008 CAMRA Good Beer Guide. We’re going nationwide! Hurrah! Andrea gets the second half off to a lively start with Gillian Welch’s “Caleb Meyer” before following with Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart’s popular evergreen, “Who’s That Girl?” Andrea then rounds off with “Star Of The County Down”. When such a talented and well-respected musician as Karl feels at home here, it can only be seen as a major vote of confidence. He begins with his familiar “Strong Foundation” before being joined by Easy and Andrea for “Rock Me Baby/Crossroads”. Steve on his strummer in G then joins Karl and Easy for an absolutely sublime rendition of Goebel Reeves’ “Hobo’s Lullaby”. Karl treats us an equally sublime “Solace” before he invites Andrea, Easy and Steve to join him once again for a grand finale of his own “Open Road”. |
