Menu Hors d’oeuvre: Andrea Ferguson Main Course: John Pape, Steve Lealand, Bob “Easy” Reid, Sam, John Murphy, Ted, Neil O’Grady Dessert: Steve Jackson
Andrea, who treated us to a highly enjoyable and varied but well-balanced gig here on Sunday, gets us under way with her first public performance of the lovely Irish traditional ballad, “The Holy Ground”, which she follows with her own “Passing Through”. Andrea continues with a rather clever medley of “Wade In The Water/Sixteen Tons/Fogtown” before finishing off with Michael Andrews’ “Mad World”. Steve plumps for his Gene Parsons autographed guitar tonight for “Abraham, Martin and John” and his own mildly reggae influenced “Fish Out Of Water”. Steve then calls upon Easy to join him on Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit In The Sky”. Steve Allen’s not with us tonight so John and Steve L. choose to entertain us with three instrumentals featuring John on lap steel guitar on two of them and banjo on the other. Easy begins with Peter Green’s “I Got A Feeling” before Andrea joins him to take us to the break with “Summertime”. Sam, who’s standing in for Paul on the sound desk tonight, opens the second half with a couple of covers, “Wild World” and “Day In A Life” followed by a new face, John Murphy, with a rendition of “Golden Brown”. Blues guitarist Ted is a more familiar face but he makes his OM debut down here as he asks Easy to join him on “Stormy Monday” and a combo of “Everyday I Have The Blues/Sweet Home Chicago”. Ted then takes up the vocals on Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice”. Although Neil played here at the hugely successful and enjoyable Open Mic Day on the 1st of July, it’s the first time he’s graced us with a visit on a Tuesday night. Neil, of course, is renowned for his classical guitar work. However, tonight he chooses to entertain us with a couple of traditional tunes, the instrumental “Maggie Cameron” and the old English folk ballad, “Lovely Joan”. Andrea calls up Steve once again. Ably accompanied by Steve L. and Easy, Steve picks up his strummer in “A” to treat us to a cracking version of Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again” before closing the evening with the ever popular sing-along, “Ring Of Fire”. With four new or fairly new faces and a quite large and appreciative audience as the night progressed, all in all it’s been an encouraging night for Andrea, Tracy and Pete. Bless them! They deserve it. |
